RPC History

The Past

In 1870, Major Cephas B. Magruder, his wife Cornelia, and their family moved to Rockledge where they homesteaded on a coquina bluff along the Indian River just south of present-day Magruder Avenue. Strong in faith, Cornelia determined that the nine children she was raising needed to have a religious education. Taking charge, she oversaw construction of a small palmetto-log cabin on their property where Presbyterian children could attend Sunday School on Sundays and school on weekdays. This cabin was the start of a long history for Rockledge Presbyterian Church.

Cornelia soon envisioned a church for the community. From 1877 until 1887, she worked ceaselessly to solicit construction funds and to gain sanction from the St. Johns Presbytery for the organization of a church in Rockledge. In 1884, her request was approved. On a lot donated by the Magruders, construction of the first Rockledge Presbyterian Church began in 1885 and was completed in 1887 at a cost of $812.

Northern visitors soon found their way to resort hotels built along the Indian River, many worshiping at RPC during their winter stay. In 1911, the congregation built a larger church on the south side of Orange Avenue, now the site of a paved parking lot. Membership grew, and in November 1952, church officials broke ground for the current complex housing Calvin Hall, the Sanctuary, the Annex, and Knox Hall. Extensive renovations in the Narthex, Sanctuary, and Chapel updated and enhanced the church culminating in a re-dedication of the building in June 2012.

The Present and Future

As with most churches, RPC has not been without challenges. Most recently, in 2016, the church accepted the resignation of its 14-year pastor after extended medical leave. During the pastor’s absence and after his resignation, RPC’s Session, its congregation, and the Central Florida Presbytery successfully worked together to maintain the physical and spiritual life of the church. In 2017, Session completed the process of finding an interim pastor, and at the same time, the Pastor Nominating Committee undertook the established Presbytery process leading to the call of a permanent pastor. In November 2019, Rev. Sandy E. Lacey, answered that call. Now, RPC finds itself planning for the future. Blessed in so many ways, Rockledge Presbyterian Church is looking forward to an exciting journey as its members chart their new course. Why not join us!
