Sanctuary
History
An interesting history lies behind our church and current Sanctuary. Through the efforts of Cornelia Magruder and her family, pioneers in the early history of Rockledge, the construction of the first Rockledge Presbyterian Church was completed in 1887 on a lot donated by the Magruders. Northern visitors soon found their way to resort hotels built along the Indian River, many worshiping at RPC during their winter stay. In 1911, the congregation built a larger church on the south side of Orange Avenue, now the site of our paved parking lot. Membership grew, and in November 1952, church officials broke ground for the current complex, housing the Sanctuary, Calvin Hall, Annex, and Knox Hall. Extensive renovations in the Narthex, Sanctuary, and Chapel updated and enhanced the church culminating in a re-dedication of the building in June 2012.
The Sanctuary, as you see it, still has many of the beautiful features it had in the fifties: its upturned boat ceiling, stained glass windows, hanging lanterns, wood pews, and massive display of bronze pipes for the pipe organ. New to the Sanctuary is its wood flooring, wall color, upholstery for the pews, and an entrance wall enhanced with large glass panels accented with stained glass taken from our former church building on Orange Avenue. Including its balcony, the Sanctuary can seat approximately 350 people at maximum capacity.
Stained Glass Windows
The stained glass windows that allow light to filter into our beautiful Sanctuary are always a subject for study and discussion. In fact, we encourage worshipers and visitors to take a walking tour of the windows, using our special church brochure to identify the symbolism of the panel on each window. From “Creation” to “Great Commission,” the windows celebrate the story of our faith from its beginning to its glorious consummation. The most spectacular of the windows is the large Cross Window that faces the congregation on the east wall. You need to be close to that wall to appreciate that window’s special symbols. Former RPC pastor George Wilcox writes in the brochure that “The rich images of each window enhance your worship experience and usher you into the presence of the living God, revealed, not just through artistic glass, but ultimately in the gift of Emmanuel—‘God with us’—Jesus Christ our Lord.”
For those interested in a walking tour of our stained glass windows in the Sanctuary or just a preview of the panels and their symbolism, the Stained Glass Window brochure can be accessed here or in “Resources.”
